The game should display more information on its compare interface on an upgrade, such as: "X stats gained, or X stats loss." This is not practical to implement due to the complexity of the process of comparing. There is simply too little space to perform it correctly within the UI.
A script that examines the requirements of an item's upgrade before allowing the item to be upgraded is another option.
